World’s worst polluters have vast impact on human health

Mercury can enter the environment naturally and from mining, chemical manufacturing, fertilizer manufacturing and smelting. But the largest man-made source is small-scale gold mining, which 10 million people depend on for their livelihoods. Many of these miners are from socially and economically marginalized populations, which forces them to work in hazardous conditions, said Ericson. Mercury exposure can cause brain, kidney and immune system damage.
