The Environmental Protection Agency and its partners have initiated measures to control the use of mercury in small scale gold mining and its impact on water bodies.
The agency believes the chemical continues to pose health problems to people who directly and indirectly use it.
It says the only way to ensure control of widespread use of mercury is to ratify a convention on the chemical.
At a workshop in Accra for environmentalists and scientists, the Deputy Minister of Environment, Science and Technology and Innovation, Dr Sugri Tia, said the control of mercury use requires an urgent action.
