The major pathway of exposure to the mines is through inhalation of mercury amalgam. On the other hand, mercury is generally absorbed directly through the skin when amalgamation is done by hand without any protective measures. Also, during processing, mercury vapour settles in homes, on food preparation areas, soil and water bodies in the environs. Mercury dust is also conveyed on the clothing and implements of miners into their various homes.
