Kyrgyzstan unrest has more to do with local factors than Canadian firm

This relationship has been lucrative but not always smooth; there were three notable chemical spills from 1998 to 2000 into surrounding water supplies. The Kyrgyz government, as part of an attempt to rewrite a contract with Centerra, has claimed that the Kumtor mine is causing vast ecological damage. Slovene and German scientists, brought in to support the claims of the Kyrgyz government, published a report that suggests this is not the case. The executive summary from the Slovenian study states that “concentrations (sic) levels of the analyzed elements in the environment were within the limits typical for such industrial operations and were below the values, (sic) which indicate an environmental pollution or contamination situation.”
