Informal miners are asking for the repeal of legislative decrees 1100, 1101 and 1102, which aim at eradicating illegal operations by making illegal mining a crime to be included in the penal code with jail sentences of up to 10 years, as well as allowing authorities to confiscate equipment, machines and inputs used by illegal miners. The most recent law creates a new system to control and monitor chemical inputs used in illegal mining activities.....
According to official figures, 30,000ha have been affected by illegal gold mining in Madre de Dios. The miners use mercury to extract gold and it then enters the local ecosystem....
