"It's fashionable to talk about this stuff now, and the big jewelry houses like to give the image to the public that this is all carefully controlled," Mr. de Vroomen says. "But I personally can't see how they do it. Gold is gold. It comes from all kinds of sources. It then goes to the bullion dealer, who turns it into 18-karat gold sheet, wire and casting."
