International gold mining companies increased investments in Tanzania's mining sector in the late 1990s after the country revised its mining laws, however, the investments have created new problems. Large-scale miners displaced artisanal miners and the two groups have since been embroiled in long running conflicts.
The conflicts have often become violent in the past few years with Africa Barrick Gold (ABG.LN) experiencing the most violent confrontations with illegal miners, resulting in the deaths of more than a dozen people in the past three years at its North Mara Gold Mine.
In addition to illegal miners, criminal activities in the country's gold mining regions have been on the rise. In January, police foiled an attempted robbery of at least 1.5 metric tons of gold bars from Geita.
