Romania-focused project developer Gabriel Resources on Monday said locals voted in favour of the proposed resolution calling for the resumption of mining in the Apuseni Mountains and, specifically, mining at the Rosia Montana gold project, which if constructed, would be Europe’s largest opencast gold mine.
A referendum held on Sunday revealed that about 63% of voters are in favour of mining resuming in the Carpathian Mountains, by restarting mining at the company’s flagship Rosia Montana project, which had been met with fierce opposition. Despite heavy snowfall in the mountain region, turnout in the referendum of about 43% of eligible voters was in line with reported voting levels across Romania in the general parliamentary elections also held on December 9.
