One of the most damaging impacts of illegal mining is its effect on the environment. Congress members Ruth Luque and Karol Paredes claim that the preliminary draft of the MAPE law fails to include concrete measures for the total elimination of mercury use, lacks filters for miners transitioning from Reinfo to Renapmat, imposes no sanctions on those registered in the new system, would allow mining in currently protected areas and would even grant tax benefits without requiring compliance with environmental standards.
