Mining companies used mercury for processing to remove the gold from the stone in which it was embedded, releasing between three to eight million pounds of mercury into California’s rivers (according to one estimate cited by the USGS). Much of this mercury was then consumed by bacteria and converted into its organic form, methylmercury, a neurotoxin that bioaccumulates in fish and can cause acute disease in humans.
