Toxic chemicals and certain heavy metals such as mercury, cyanide, zinc and nitric acid are used in the gold panning chain [13] . Of these, cyanide and mercury are of particular concern. The use of mechanical methods which are even more environmentally friendly by eliminating chemical treatment, could be a profitable and sustainable solution.
