Local MSU Professor and Team Tackles Global Mercury Emissions from Gold Mining

 Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) contributes to about 20% of the world's gold supply and nearly 40% of global mercury emissions, says Jacqueline Gerson, an assistant professor at Michigan State University. Despite the Minamata Convention on Mercury's international ban on mercury, ASGM still uses this metal due to its effectiveness in gold extraction and black market availability.
