The Effects of Small-Scale Gold Mining and Mercury Pollution in Ghana

 Small-scale and artisanal mining involves informal mining operations conducted by individuals or companies on small concessions. Although it may seem low impact, these operations use heavy equipment and toxic mercury to extract gold from mineral deposits and sands. In Ghana, miners mix liquid mercury with gold deposits and use kerosene torches to burn off the mercury, leaving behind the gold. However, this process releases toxic gases into the air, land, and water.
