 Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) presents a significant threat to the global ecosystem, including the Amazon basin. The threat is not only due to deforestation and degradation caused by mining activities but also to the mercury used for gold amalgamation, which seeps into waterways and subways, polluting the water and entering into the local chain food through fish consumption. Mercury-dependent ASGM is the largest source of anthropogenic emissions to the atmosphere, soils and water bodies.Gyyana
