Saamaka Maroon Communities Face Continued Land Threats in Suriname

 While Saamaka are struggling against logging, Indigenous groups in Suriname battle mercury pollution associated with gold mining. Suriname is the only country in the Western Hemisphere that does not have legislation to recognize and protect the internationally recognized rights of Indigenous and tribal peoples.
