Peru’s 1993 Environmental Protection Regulations set out the environmental regulations and restrictions with which the mining sector must comply. This includes assigning miners and mining companies the responsibility for the accurate management of emissions, dumping, and disposal of waste products that result from mining processes. The law also set standards and controls for the use of chemicals, including mercury, in mining activity. In 2015, Peru banned imports of mercury to combat its widespread use in mining activity.
