 Another concern for environmental groups is the threat of mercury used for gold mining leaching into the water. SOS Orinoco estimates that up to 70% of the course of the Caroní – the second largest river in Venezuela and almost a thousand kilometers long – “may be at risk of contamination due to the use of mercury in gold extraction operations.”
