Ecocide in Venezuela: the Chavista dictatorship caused an environmental disaster with the illegal exploitation of natural resources

 Another concern for environmental groups is the threat of mercury used for gold mining leaching into the water. SOS Orinoco estimates that up to 70% of the course of the CaronĂ­ – the second largest river in Venezuela and almost a thousand kilometers long – “may be at risk of contamination due to the use of mercury in gold extraction operations.”
