How Illegal Mining Fuels Pollution and Corruption in Colombia’s Northwest

 Illegal gold mining uses huge dredgers, known locally as “dragons,” to scoop out material from the riverbed, which is crushed and sieved to separate the gold particles from the rest of the minerals. Miners then add mercury to make the gold fall to the bottom of the mixture.
