The avalanche of 40m cubic metres of toxic mud, laden with iron, manganese, mercury and arsenic, flowed into the Rio Doce and killed 19 people, destroying 600km of river and much of the marine life in the reef banks where it settled on the coast. Another tailing dam burst in January 2019 on the Paraopeba River, killing almost 300 people. The two collapses are among the worst environmental disasters in Brazil’s history.
