Army Corps of Engineers’ Pebble finding is a punch in the gut for Bristol Bay fishermen
Mine waste is composed of rock that has been treated with mercury and cyanide to extract minerals. Pogo Mine near Delta Junction has a permit that allows it to dry stack treated tailings in a nearby creek. Ten percent of tailings contain leftover cyanide, and this portion is mixed with cement and put back into the mine. Pogo is one of the top-10 producers of mercury waste in the country.
