The ground measurements of mercury levels in the water, fish, and soil were taken in the Peruvian Amazon. In the Colorado River watershed in Madre de Dios, from nine locations, the mercury content in soil and water samples was analyzed.
Scientists observed that the model was able to predict accurately which areas could have higher water concentrations of mercury. The model also suggests that the amount of mercury entering local water sources in the Colorado River watershed has doubled due to deforestation in the last two decades.
