Tracking our resources through satellite imagery

Globally, artisanal and small-scale gold mining is the biggest anthropogenic source of mercury emissions, estimated to have introduced 1220 tonnes of mercury into the terrestrial and freshwater environments in 2015, according to UN Environment’s 2018 Global Mercury Assessment. The Minamata Convention on Mercury aims to reduce mercury emissions worldwide. In 2018, Colombia made the use of mercury in artisanal gold mining illegal. A complete ban on industrial use is planned for 2023.
