Gold traded clandestinely in Puerto Galilea. Miners often use mercury to separate gold from the surrounding soil. Mercury is also a neurotoxin, posing serious dangers to people exposed to it, and it often escapes into the environment when it’s used in mining. Research has shown high blood levels of mercury in members of some communities living downstream from gold mining operations.
