Makoni stresses the need to formalize Zimbabwe’s gold mining sector and adopt a new legal framework. In practice, that would involve setting up processing centers in all eight mining provinces of the country, as well as increasing surveillance of major mining areas. These measures could stop the smuggling of gold, Makoni says, while also making informal miners employees of mining companies. In the process, they would be trained to use new mining technology that allows extraction of gold without using cyanide or mercury.
