Responding to the agitations government announced on Thursday that the ban would be lifted next year but on condition that mining companies would undergo a “strict vetting” process to assess their preparedness to abide by the mining laws of the country.
These measures will include, actions to eliminate worst practices of mercury exposure, formalisation of the artisanal mining sector, reduction of emission in releases of mercury, Strategies for providing information and Public Health Strategy.
