Despite laws intended to prevent miners from pushing deeper into protected areas of the Amazon, there has been little to nothing in the way of enforcement. Driven by the high price of gold, thousands of miners are now believed to be active in the Tambopata Reserve and along the Madre de Dios River, turning the local waterways into a toxic slurry of mud and mercury. If this activity continues, thousands of animal species and dozens of local indigenous tribes could vanish.
