These days, the project is run by Atlantic Gold Corporation, and its plans have shape-shifted from one, to two, and now four open pit mines. These will be giant gashes in the earth, one of them nearly a kilometre long and half a kilometre wide. They will use huge quantities of cyanide, fresh water and explosives, produce many millions of tonnes of waste rock, and require the transport of massive amounts of rock in heavy trucks between mining sites. It also means that a provincial park and museum will have to be relocated.
