How Fairtrade is setting a new gold standard for the African mining industry

In Uganda, unregulated gold mining has led to conflict, exploitation, child labour, smuggling and environmental and human health concerns. Workers often use mercury to wash the gold ore with their bare hands, which has been linked to a host of health problems. That same mercury seeps into the soil and runs downstream into Lake Victoria via a series of wetlands. Fatalities are frequent, especially after heavy rains have made the ground unstable.
