The seriousness of this health problem becomes evident when one considers the huge amount of fish Amazon basin residents consume, in a region where a kilo of beef can cost between $15-20 reals, while a kilo of mapará, a popular commercial fish, sells for a mere $3 reals or can be caught for free in the local reservoir or river.
