The Road That Exposed Peru’s Amazon

The gold rush is leaving its mark on this corner of the Amazon. The miners use tons of mercury to extract the gold flakes from the sediment, which ends up in the water and the soil. As mercury is highly toxic in any form or chemical bond, severely affecting the neural system, the contamination has implications for local communities.
