The Philippines Cracks Down on Mining in the Name of the Environment

Mining is perceived by many in the Philippines as synonymous with environmental degradation, and in certain regions it is seen as an invasion of indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands. A number of communities have also had problematic experiences with companies when it comes to the process of getting free, prior, informed consent before commencing operations. For example, there have been questions about the representation of indigenous communities and the selection of elders by mining companies during these consultations. Several companies have violated environmental protection laws, but critics blame the entire mining industry. This negative perception of the mining industry has made it a challenge for industry leaders to promote the idea of responsible mining, especially in the midst of growing environmental consciousness and public scrutiny in the internet age.
