Ten months after a massive cyanide solution spill at a mine, citizens of Jachal, San Juan are demanding Barrick Gold to shut down its Veladero project, which they claim is breaking the Glacial Law because of the site’s location in a periglaciar area.
The mine has been under scrutinity since August, 2015 when one million litres of a cyanide solution were spilled because of a valve failure and a sluice gate being left open. Barrick employees were charged and the company was fined for 145 million pesos.
