New video shows environmental impact of illegal mining in Madre de Dios

Estimates early this year have suggested that more than 100,000 acres of rainforest in the region have been cleared and the region is home to 30,000 illegal gold miners.
Miners use mercury among other chemicals and extraction techniques that destroy the rainforest in days, soil erosion and contamination eventually resulting in a damaged ecosystem.
The video serves to warn and to raise awareness, a call for international attention to prevent the further destruction of one of the world’s most biodiverse locations.
