Another major challenge according to Shayo is using of mercury by small gold miners when sifting gold worse still the activity is done at the water catchment. “it is very dangerous to other people who would use contaminated water travelled for a long distance from the catchment area,” he warned.
He further warned that people living close to small mines whether they engage or not engaging in mining were in great danger to be affected by the mercury used.
Shayo said findings done show that mercury can penetrate into the soil and mix with water that can flow long distance from the source of water to a river or a lake.
