Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this case is that the use of cyanide has been so calmly accepted as a standard part of mining operations despite its lethal image. The tests thus far have shown the local water supply to be safe (the fatalities would surely abound otherwise) but continued neglect would seem worse than playing with fire.
