Mozambique: GOLD MINERS GIVEN DEADLINE TO END POLLUTION OF RIVERS

The MANICA Provincial government in Central MOZAMBIQUE has set DECEMBER as the deadline to end pollution of rivers in the region by artisanal gold miners
Media reports say the miners, mostly illegal and many of them foreign, are poisoning the water bodies because they use toxic substances like mercury when extracting gold.
At least SIX rivers have been affected, including such major watercourses as the PUNGOE and the REVUE, which are the main sources of drinking water for the cities of BEIRA and CHIMOIO.
