Mercury Exposure Assessment and Spatial Distribution in A Ghanaian Small-Scale Gold Mining Community

Our assessment of Hg contamination in multiple media affords a more holistic and integrated understanding of ecological contamination and human exposures. Further, by mapping ASGM activities, household locations, and relating this to Hg exposure biomarkers we are able to show that contamination by Hg is widespread across such communities. While urban, non-mining populations are generally perceived as having little Hg exposure, elevated soil Hg concentrations from the Bolgatanga refinery stress the need to better understand the exposure for the surrounding populations.
