Stretches of several rivers in Manica district in central Mozambican province of the same name are now devoid of life due to pollution caused by artisanal gold mining, the Maputo daily Noticias reports.
The daily said in its Wednesday edition that among the substances used by miners is mercury which can have lethal effects when it enters the food chain.
