Cases about invasion of water sources by irresponsible individuals have recently been reported countrywide. Land near water sources is cleared for cultivation and illegal mining, such as of gold, is undertaken to the peril of unsuspecting water consumers.
The worst part of it is that gold mining is accompanied by use of toxic mercury to capture the minute particles of gold. But some of the mercury particles escape, flow down the stream and end up in human stomachs, after being swallowed.
Medical experts warn that exposure to even small amounts of toxic mercury is enough to cause serious health complications as the compound affects the nerves, digestive and immune systems, lungs, kidneys, skin and eyes.
