ASGM is the single largest intentional – release of Mercury in the world. ASGM is the extraction of minerals, especially Gold, by miners working in small or medium size operations utilizing crude techniques and technologies. Often times mercury is usually used in the separation of metals from ore by mostly unskilled or semi skilled people with or no knowledge of the risk posed by the excesses ASGM usually involves the use of substantial amounts of mercury in mining processing oftentimes in highly unsafe and environmentally hazardous conditions.
