Colombia Warns About Risk of Illegal Mining

Deforestation and pollution of waters with mercury, are two of the damages of illegal mining in Colombia, damages detected in 80 municipalities of the 17 departments, research revealed today. The uncontrolled use of toxic substances such as mercury and cyanide in or near rivers or other water sources, creates serious risks for the people, alongside excessive search work alongside and extraction of gold undermine conservation of the soil and forest, emphasized a report by the Comptroller General of the Republic.

According to researches, people who eat fish contaminated with mercury, faces losses on their physical and mental state as memory loss, decreased IQ and hand tremors, added the summary quoted by El Nuevo Siglo newspaper.
