Mercury contamination is a “public health emergency,” according to a
prominent Indonesian environmentalist, and the new government of
President Joko Widodo should move quickly to halt trade in the toxic
heavy metal.
Yuyun Ismawati, a 2009 winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize for
her work on sustainable waste management, called on Mr. Widodo to halt
the illegal smuggling of hundreds of tons of mercury into Indonesia,
most of which is used in small-scale gold mining operations.
