Venezuela: Demoting the environment

The 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq. mi) park containing unique natural monuments is being destroyed by mining. Hundreds of settling ponds used in gold mining are operating in all impunity there.

Equally noteworthy is the intervention in the Imataca Forest Reserve, a legally protected area in Bolívar state occupying an area of 3.8 million hectares, created in 1961 with the purpose of protecting humid tropical forest for the specific use of wood production. Decree 3110 approved by the Chávez government in September 2004 permits small-, medium- and large-scale mining, with large mining concessions being allocated to Chinese consortia.
