importantly, the Convention will require countries to apply modern technology
to control mercury emissions from the largest industrial sources. The United States, which already employs
these technologies, should see a significant reduction in cross-border mercury
pollution as a result of improved controls in other countries. The
Convention also addresses other major sources of mercury pollution, like
artisanal and small-scale gold mining, and includes provisions to reduce
mercury use in consumer products and industrial processes and mercury trade and
