Philippines: Prov’l mining board to conduct water test on Kalinga rivers

Small-scale mining was pointed in the report of the Environment Management Bureau, an attach bureau under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,  as one source of mercury contamination on said rivers.

The provincial government through an ordinance authored by Board Member Chester Alunday on December 4, 2012 prohibited the use of mercury in artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities in the province.

BANToxic, an international organization, came earlier to the province to urge small-scale miners in Balbalan to shift to safer methods of extracting gold following  reports of the Philippine Information Agency.
