President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, also at the meeting, called on miners to end the practice of child labour.
"We will not allow children into gold mining sites," he said, "We have to stop this."
A 2011 report by Human Rights Watch detailed reports of children aged
six to 17 in Mali's artisanal mines digging pits, working underground
in unstable mines, carrying and crushing heavy ore, and using toxic
mercury to extract gold.
