Sustainable and ethically sourced jewelry gaining traction among manufacturers and suppliers

In working with artisanal mining sector, Fairtrade works to formalize small-scale mining; to eradicate mercury usage, thereby enhancing the state of the environment and public health; ensure that participants comply with internationally agreed-to conflict-free protocols; and eliminate both child labor and forced labor.

Fairtrade Gold’s unique system now allows small jewelers, goldsmiths, silversmiths and artists to use ethically sourced fair trade gold and silver in their jewelry by registering with Fairtrade Gold’s simple online Goldsmiths Registration Scheme. It allows them to charge a premium for their product, a portion of which will be channeled back to Fairtrade, which in turn will invest in the mining communities. The new jewelers who have signed up to the program have a potential collective clout to deliver $100,000  in fair trade premium back to artisanal and small scale mining communities in South America
