Because artisanal mining is illegal in Misisi,
the miners are not following any environmental regulations. As a result
of this, the region’s primary water source is contaminated with mercury
and acids and no longer has any fish, the game native to the area has
been wiped out, and there is very little natural vegetation. The
necessity of transporting foods into the community from other regions
has created a high cost of living.
