Dr Gustavo Bretas of the Pan American Health Organisation echoed Dr
De Theije in stressing the need for legislation to protect the mining
community, and Gerold Dompig of OGS emphasized that it was important not
to criminalise what were often wrongly referred to as ‘illegal miners’,
who were only, like the rest of us, looking for a way to make a living.
Mr Dompig discussed the notion of ‘cleaner mining’, using less
cyanide and mercury, but pointed out that it was far easier for the big
companies to introduce such changes. ‘No obligations without rights’ was
a theme of the afternoon, but Mr Dompig also said small-scale miners
were not exempt from corporate social responsibility.
