Limited mine production in China stir questions for where gold originates

Speculation has it that some gold is being produced in environmentally harmful ways, such as through dynamite detonation and mercury pollution, which some producers have been able to get away with because of lax oversight, Kitco News reported.
In any case, experts say that China likely won’t relinquish its title as the world’s top gold producer anytime soon, with demand up 32 percent last year alone when compared with 2012. Worldwide, though, more significant surges in demand were evident in Thailand at 73 percent and Turkey at 60 percent, according to WGC data.
